Autodesk Research built a narrative authoring tool that treats story branching as a navigable state space

WhatIF: Branched Narrative Fiction Visualization for Authoring Emergent Narratives using LLMs

WhatIF, from Autodesk Research, applies the same world-model logic used in design and simulation to narrative architecture — mapping the branching possibility-space of a story as a structure authors can explore and steer using LLMs. The provenance matters: this isn't coming from a media company or an AI lab, but from a firm whose core business is modelling physical and engineered systems.

That the story-as-state-space framing has reached Autodesk's research agenda suggests it's becoming a general-purpose mental model for structured generation, not a niche narrative-AI experiment. Of the tools in this space, WhatIF is among the closest to something shippable — a concrete authoring interface built on state reasoning, not just a research artefact.
