Generative AI is a distinct medium — and Manovich can now prove it

A Medium That Thinks: AI and Media Cognition — Lev Manovich (2026)

Lev Manovich, the scholar who defined new media studies, argues in his 2026 paper that generative AI is not merely a new tool but a structurally novel medium — one defined by six unique properties that no prior medium possesses. Two stand out: *media cognition*, the capacity to reason about and transform all prior media forms, and *machine variability*, which replaces mechanical reproduction with dynamic, context-sensitive output. Where McLuhan gave us analogies, Manovich gives us AI-specific structural claims — a citable theoretical scaffold for anyone making the case that this moment is categorically different, not just incrementally so.
